Learn About 3-K and Pre-K Seat Types!

Dear family,

If your child was born in 2022 or 2021, they can attend 3-K or pre-K, respectively, in fall 2025! Before the application opens on January 15, we encourage you to learn about the different seat types offered in 3-K or pre-K. Many schools offer more than one seat type and your child may be eligible for more than one seat type.

School Day seats are open to all NYC children born in 2022 or 2021. These seats are free and provide early care and education for 6 hours and 20 minutes per day during the school year (September to June). Some schools offer before or after school care, for which there may be a fee. You can use the “Need Before or After School Care” filter on the 3-K Directory or Pre-K Directory to find these options. This seat type is offered at NYC Early Education Centers, Family Child Care providers (3-K only), District Schools, and Pre-K Centers.
Extended Day and Year seats are only open to eligible students. These seats are free or low cost and provide up to 10 hours of early care and education a day, year-round, including the summer. Eligibility for Extended Day and Year seats is based on family income and needs and is confirmed by completing a Child Care application. This seat type is offered at NYC Early Education Centers and Family Child Care providers (3-K only).
Head Start seats are only open to eligible students. These seats are free and provide up to 10 hours of early care and education a day, year-round, including the summer. Eligibility for Head Start seats is based on family income and needs and the school will work with you directly to confirm eligibility. This seat type is offered only at NYC Early Education Centers.
Dual Language seats (pre-K only) offer instruction in English and another language. These are listed as separate programs in MySchools – you can filter for Dual Language seats in MySchools and add them to your application. This seat type is offered at NYC Early Education Centers, District Schools, and Pre-K Centers.

Dear Families, 

Participate in our virtual events about Elementary Admissions.

All NYC families with children born in 2020, 2021, and 2022 are invited to join us at a virtual information session covering 3-K, pre-K, and kindergarten admissions. After the presentation, we’ll respond to your questions. 

During each online event, we’ll walk you through each of the elementary admissions processes. We’ll cover how to learn about schools and programs, and their priorities, using the online school directory at MySchools.nyc. We’ll also discuss how to create a strong and balanced application, and how to apply.

Check the events below to find out what interpretation services will be available at each event. Each event will cover the same information, so there is no need to attend more than one event. There will also be time given to answer questions from attendees.

December 12, 2pm to 3pm | Event held in English. Interpretation provided in: Chinese (Mandarin), French, Urdu, American Sign Language (ASL)
December 17, 6pm to 7pm | Event held in English. Interpretation provided in: Spanish, Korean and Bengali, American Sign Language (ASL)
December 19, 2pm to 3pm | Event held in English. Interpretation provided in: Arabic, Haitian Creole, Russian, American Sign Language (ASL)
January 7th,6pm to 7pm | Event held in (Chinese, Mandarin only). No additional Interpretation.
January 16,6pm to 7pm | Event held in English. Interpretation provided in: Chinese (Mandarin), French, Urdu, American Sign Language (ASL)
January 22, 6pm to 7pm | Event held in (Spanish only). No additional interpretation.
February 5th,6pm to 7pm | Event held in English. Interpretation provided in: Arabic, Haitian Creole, Russian, American Sign Language (ASL)
February 13, 2pm to 3pm Event held in English. Interpretation provided in: Bangla, Korean, Spanish, American Sign Language (ASL)
February 25th, 6pm to 7pm Event held in (Arabic Only). No additional interpretation.
