Instructional Focus 2023-2024
ELA:
At PS 92 our focus across all grades is to strengthen reading comprehension with an emphasis on building background knowledge, vocabulary development, questioning and summary.
- To build background knowledge, we will activate prior knowledge, make text to self connections and connect to a variety of text sets (different genres, texts ,vidoes, images and more...)
- To develop vocabulary, we will select high leverage vocabulary (Tiers 2 & 3 ), explicitly teach through context clues, word parts and the Frayer model
- To strengthen questioning, we will use text dependent questions, plan for anticipatory questions
- To strengthen academic discussions we will plan opportunities for oral rehearsal (with Think, Pair, Share protocol), and summarizing (both orally and in written) with the Think, Pair, Share with Consensus
Math:
At PS 92 our focus across all grades is to strengthen mathematics rigor (conceptual understanding, procedural skills, fluency and application) with an emphasis on academic discussion and problem solving.
- To strengthen mathematics rigor, we will unpack the Next Generations Learning Standards in mathematics to connect conceptual understanding with procedural skills and fluency that aligns to the learning targets and visual models. We will also activate our prior knowledge to connect to new concepts, skills and applications.
- To develop academic discussions, we will plan for anticipatory questions using DoK to make connections with strategies and skills and to solidify mathematics understanding, to infuse Tier 2 and 3 academic vocabulary and to rehearse discussion with Think, Pair, Share protocol
To deepen students' problem solving skills, we activate prior knowledge and use visual models to understand what the problems are asking, connect the different strategies and communicate their strategies orally and in writing by using the think, pair and share with consensus and chalk talk protocol.
